David Pinfield awarded a Marie Curie "Initial Training Network" (ITN) worth 3.2M euros (£2.75M).
David Pinfield is the PI on a Marie Curie "Initial Training Network" (ITN) worth 3.2M euros (£2.75M) to UH. It is funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme to support research, technological development and innovation. This ITN (called RoPACS) will focus on the search for "Rocky Planets (like the Earth) Around Cool Stars", and the development of space-based technology to make future studies of extra-solar planets.
RoPACS is founded on the group’s extra-solar planet and brown dwarf research and an academic-industrial collaboration between CAR and the space engineering company Astrium in Stevenage (who are the network’s industrial partner). RoPACS academic partners include UH (the principal node), the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge, the Institute de Astrofisica de Canarias in the Canary Islands, the Max-Planck-Institut fur extraterrestrische Physik in Munich, the Laboratorio de Astrofisica Espacial y Fisica Fundamental in Madrid, and the Main Astronomical Observatory in Kiev. RoPACS will train 15 early-stage and experienced researchers, in the areas of research, technology development, and complementary skills, over its 4 year duration (Dec 2008 - Nov 2012).
The academic-industrial R&D activities will be carried out jointly at CAR and Astrium, and will centre on the European Space Agency's "Cosmic Vision 2015-2025" programme to implement the next generation of space-based observatories. This collaboration will provide a deep knowledge exchange between space manufacturing industry and astronomers, and aims to improve inter-sectorial understanding both in terms of the Cosmic Vision science requirements, and the engineering constraints on studying extra-solar planets with future space technology.
There are four Experienced Researcher Positions available; for more information and details of how to apply for these positions, see the RoPacs website.
