Introduction

Wide Field Camera on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope on Mauna Kea, HawaiiThe 2008 STFC Introductory Summer School for new research students in astronomy will be held at the de Havilland Campus of the University of Hertfordshire from Sunday 31st August to Friday 5th September.

The School will include introductory lectures in all areas of astronomy with a particular emphasis on the relevant key research areas identified by STFC. There will be the opportunity to meet many leading internationally recognized astronomers, young researchers who are part way through their PhD programmes and of course other research students who will be starting their own research careers.

Protoplanetary Nebula AFGL 2688There will be a full social programme, including an Elizabethan Banquet at Hatfield House, former home of Elizabeth I, and a cruise on the River Thames. The de Havilland Campus has a swimming pool and other sports facilities which will be free to use for all attendees.

Accommodation, meals and formal social activities will be free for STFC-supported students. Individual travel costs should be claimed directly from STFC. Postgraduate students who are not supported by STFC, and who wish to attend the School, should contact Dr Tim Gledhill, Course Director.
